The Ultimate Vancouver Island Elopement Guide and Checklist

There is a specific kind of magic that happens when the fog rolls off the Pacific Ocean and hits the ancient cedar trees. It’s a quiet, heavy, romantic silence that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

If you are reading this, you are likely considering trading the banquet halls and seating charts for salt spray, and an intimate exchange of vows. As a Vancouver Island elopement photographer who specializes in capturing love stories on both digital and analog film, I can tell you: there is no better backdrop for your love story than this rugged island off the coast of British Columbia.

This guide covers everything you need to know about eloping on Vancouver Island—from the legalities of BC marriage licenses to the hidden gems that only locals know about. Let’s plan your greatest adventure yet.

WHY ELOPE ON VANCOUVER ISLAND

The Pacific Northwest (PNW) offers a palette that is rare to find elsewhere. It is the antithesis of the manicured ballroom. It is raw, elemental, and deeply romantic.

For couples who value experience over tradition, the Island offers:

/ Unmatched Scenery: Rugged coastlines, waterfalls, and mountains.

/ Privacy: It is easy to find a secluded spot where the only witnesses are the eagles and the ocean.

/ The Moody Aesthetic: If you love the look of cinematic, emotive photography, the Island’s natural lighting is world-class.

THE LIGHT

For film photography, light is everything. The Island is famous for its “soft box” effect. The omnipresent marine layer acts as a giant diffuser, softening shadows and creating flattering, pearlescent skin tones. When the sun does break through, it is low and golden, cutting through the trees in shafts that look cinematic on Super 8 film.

The Texture

Think of the contrasts: delicate silk against rough granite; polished gold rings against driftwood bleached by decades of salt. Vancouver Island is a place of texture. Whether we are shooting on the black rocks of Ucluelet or the golden swaying grass of the Cowichan Valley, the landscape adds a layer of depth to your imagery that a studio simply cannot replicate.

The Logistics:
How to Legally Elope in BC

Before we dream about locations, let’s handle the paperwork. Getting married in British Columbia is surprisingly straightforward, even for non-residents.

1. The Marriage License

You must purchase a marriage license within three months of your elopement date.

Where to get it: You can pick this up at any Service BC location or from an authorized Marriage License Issuer (like London Drugs or Westland Insurance). Explore the list of locations here.

Cost: The fee is $100 CAD (non-refundable).

ID Required: You need primary ID (such as your birth certificate or passport) for both parties. Only one of you needs to be present to buy the license, but you must have ID for both.

2. The Witnesses

To make it legal, you need two witnesses present at the ceremony to sign the documents. The officiant, unfortunately, cannot act as one.

Pro Tip: If you are eloping just the two of you, I (your photographer) can act as one witness. As for the second, we can often find a kind stranger, bring an assistant, or you can bring along a close friend or family member to share in the moment.

3. The Officiant

You cannot just have a friend ordained online to marry you in BC. You must hire a registered Marriage Commissioner or a licensed Officiant/Celebrant. Explore the list here.

Commissioners: Governed by the government, they stick to specific scripts and are geographically bound to their specific town (e.g., Tofino or Victoria). They are the most budget-friendly option.

Celebrants: They offer personalized, custom ceremonies and will often travel with you to remote locations. Some of our favourites include:
